They were born in the USA, and plenty of us would like to drive them in the UK. Whether you have snagged a pristine 1960s Corvette in California, won the bidding for an early Shelby Mustang at a Mecum auction, or are bringing your personal collection across the Atlantic, shipping a vehicle internationally is a major undertaking.
At Racing Green Car Storage, a number of our national and international clients ship high-value, classic, and collector-grade cars into the UK, and in some cases export them further down the road. Ensuring everything is plain sailing comes down to more than just handing over your hard-earned cash to a specialist shipping company. You need to do your homework and tick your way through a checklist that would rival a cargo ship captain’s responsibilities.
Once a vehicle lands on British soil, it requires specialised care, customs clearance support, and, in many cases, secure storage and ongoing management.
To help you navigate the process smoothly, we have broken down the practical steps, hidden traps, and essential considerations for importing a car from the USA to the UK.
1. Choosing the right shipping partner
The success of your import relies heavily on the team you trust to handle it.
Reputation and track record
You know what they say: you get what you pay for. So when it comes to entrusting your cherished car to a third party, never choose a shipping firm based on price alone. Look for established specialists with a long track record of handling high-value classic and luxury vehicles. Companies that primarily move bulk household goods or everyday family cars often lack the white-glove care required for delicate, low-clearance, or historic vehicles which are at once emotionally, historically and financially valuable.
How to compare providers
Word of mouth: Ask fellow car collectors, owners' clubs, or specialist storage facilities like Racing Green for first-hand recommendations.
Independent reviews: Look beyond the glossy promises of a website and social media. Search independent forums, Google Reviews, Trustpilot and TrustIndex for genuine feedback from people with first-hand experience of a company’s services.
Brokers vs. direct shippers: It may be worth considering the services of a freight broker, as they can shop around for shipping lanes, but ensure you know who is physically handling your car at the US port and upon UK arrival.
Terms & conditions: Compare the fine print. Check who covers port handling fees, demurrage (storage charges incurred at the port during delays), and whether customs clearance support is included in the quote.
2. Ocean shipping options & timeframes

Roll-on/roll-off versus enclosed container
Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo): The vehicle is driven onto a specialised vessel. While cheaper, it leaves the car exposed to port weather, requires the car to be fully operational, and restricts placing loose spare parts inside the vehicle.
Shared or dedicated container shipping: The safest and most secure method for collector cars. Your car is strapped into a sealed metal container. Dedicated containers allow you to ship non-runners, restoration projects, and spare parts alongside the vehicle.
How long does it take?
In total, the door-to-door process typically takes eight to 12 weeks. Here’s a rough breakdown of the steps:
US Inland transit & customs export clearance: One to three weeks.
Ocean transit: Approximately 10 to 14 days from the East Coast (e.g., New York) to major UK ports like Felixstowe or Southampton; allow around 21 to 30 days from the West Coast (e.g., Los Angeles).
UK customs clearance & unloading: One to two weeks.
3. Essential paperwork checklist
Before a vehicle can legally leave the US and enter the UK, you will need to a complete a hefty dossier of paperwork:
US Certificate of Title: The original, clean title document is mandatory. US Customs requires this at least 72 hours prior to export.
Bill of Sale / Invoice: Proving ownership and the exact purchase price for tax calculations.
Bill of Lading: Issued by the shipping line once the car is loaded.
Photo ID & Proof of Address: Required for UK customs clearance and DVLA registration.
NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrivals): Must be submitted to HMRC within 14 days of landing in the UK.
4. Tax & duty implications (The "30-Year rule")
Understanding HMRC rules can save you thousands of pounds. The tax burden depends heavily on the age and condition of the vehicle. Modern cars that are less than 30-years old typically pay 10 per cent import duty and 20 per cent import VAT, which is quite a chunk of change. Note that those fees are based on the car purchase price together with the cost of insurance and shipping. Whereas qualifying classic cars more than 30 years old attract no import duty and just five per cent import VAT.
Qualifying for 5 per cent concessional VAT (Heading 9705)
To qualify for 0 per cent Duty and 5 per cent VAT, under HMRC Heading 9705, HMRC requires the classic car to be in its original, unmodified condition and no longer in production. Period-correct maintenance and sympathetic restorations are accepted, but major engine swaps or chassis modifications can disqualify it.
Note: If you are permanently relocating to the UK and have owned the vehicle for at least six months overseas, you may qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, eliminating duty and VAT altogether.
5. Marine transit insurance: do you need it?
Yes, absolutely. Standard motor insurance policies do not cover vehicles while they are in international transit or sitting on a cargo vessel. This is a must-have type of insurance.
Types of coverage
All-Risks Marine Insurance: Covers loss, theft, and physical damage from loading to unloading. Always insist on an "All-Risks" policy based on the vehicle’s agreed market value.
Total Loss Only (TLO): Only pays out if the vessel sinks or the container is completely lost overboard. It does not cover scratches, dents, or strap damage.
What if the ship is lost at sea?
As seafarers will tell you, the sea is the sea. Unpredictable at best, things can go wrong – such as when the car carrier ship Felicity Ace caught fire and sank in the Atlantic Ocean, in 2022, with a $400 million cargo of cars aboard, including 85 new Lamborghinis.
If a vessel capsizes or suffers catastrophic failure, your Marine Transit Policy is there to settle the agreed value of the car. Additionally, maritime law includes a concept known as "General Average." If a ship's captain must jettison cargo or incur massive expenses to save the vessel, all cargo owners on board share the financial loss proportionately. A comprehensive marine insurance policy protects you against General Average claims; without it, you could face heavy financial liability simply to release your container.
Modern container shipping lines offer real-time GPS tracking linked to your container number. Most specialist import agents provide portal access where you can track the vessel's journey across the Atlantic.
Handling unexpected delays
Port congestion, weather disruptions, and random customs inspections by US Customs or UK Border Force can delay deliveries by days or weeks.
Customs Inspections: If Border Force flags a container for X-ray or physical inspection, port authorities will charge inspection and storage fees.
Mitigation: Ensure your paperwork, chassis numbers (VIN), and bill of sale are 100 per cent accurate before the car arrives at the departure port. Incomplete paperwork is the primary cause of severe port delays.
7. Arrival in the UK: what happens next?
Once the car clears UK Customs and NOVA is complete, the process isn't quite finished:
UK road compliance: Depending on age, American cars may require minor lighting modifications, such as fitting amber rear indicators and a rear fog light, to pass an MOT or Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test. (Vehicles over 40-years old are exempt from MOT testing).
DVLA registration: Submit your V55/5 application, US title, NOVA clearance, proof of insurance via the VIN, and the £55 registration fee to obtain your UK registration and age-related number plates.
Safe storage & transport: Freshly imported cars should not be left sitting at busy commercial ports where storage fees mount daily and the risk of damage is ever-present.
